Hi Kathy

There are 2 things here: (1) there’s meaning and purpose in life, which involves working out the best way to live – from what you can see around you - while also being prepared to alter your principles as one matures and gains more experience; and (2) metaphysical/spiritual realisation, which involves learning to observe and reflect on the mystery of our existence and why we seem to be in the dark as to what it’s all about.

These 2 things are completely separate, and in my experience it’s a big mistake to try and turn life into an ongoing mystical experience the way New Agers do. Life is life: it’s nasty, demanding and the good times are fleeting; that’s what it is; the only thing we can do is live as best we can.

Spiritual/metaphysical realisation is the realm where the real action is, but it has nothing to do with improving our lives and trying to achieve the Age of Aquarius. There is no such age, and never will be. If you look at how your experience presents itself to you, slowly and carefully and persistently, you can find out for yourself how ordinary experience is ‘constructed’ and where the ‘secrets’ to existence are hidden. This has nothing whatsover – repeat nothing whatsoever – to do with God, yoga, Jesus Christ, mindfulness, human goodness, well-being or any of the ‘wonderful’ New Age offerings. Knowledge about knowledge lies in a realm beyond all forms of life and experience.

Regarding peace of mind – I don’t have any more peace of mind than anyone else; nor do I want it. Normality is fine by me in the sense that ordinary life is not improved by imagining the possibility of existing in some kind of blissful, mindful heaven. No such place exists outside of the imagination, and too much imagining just leads to disaster. Best just to be ordinary. If I need peace of mind I fix myself a nice strong drink and it works every time.

Hope this answers what you were asking.
