Meister Eckhart was a metaphysician not a mystic, so his teaching has nothing whatsoever to do with theology & the religious deprecation of the self (ie God & his loving goodness underlies everything, if only you could get rid of your ego, etc etc). He may look like a proto-New Ager but that's only because the language of pure metaphysics took centuries to develop in the West, & Eckhart depended for his conceptualisations on Aquinas.
