We need a 'self' for worldly existence, and as we all know, most of our everyday energies are spent preserving and advancing this worldly self. But metaphysical explorations and observations can easily reveal this worldly self to be 'phenomenal' like any other perceptible thing or entity, and of no real value beyond the obvious. 'Knowing' as a metaphysical capacity does not have a 'self' - it simply apprehends what it apprehends. And that which apprehends metaphysical 'knowing' is even less 'selfish' (for want of a better term).
