You don't need to relate this to your own experience: this is about pointing out that 'the capacity' which informs you as to 'what's what' is crucial, and that all the things it then tells you are secondary. Confusion is just another type of experience, as is clarity. Gradations between lucid self awareness and self-forgetfulness (unawareness) are infinite: sometimes it's this, sometimes it's that. Sometimes you know what's going on; sometimes you don't - it's the 'thing (capacity)' that tells you what's happening that's key, not the information it gives you.
